Projects

In 2025, my focus is on expanding my knowledge of my local ecosystems and the individual plants within them.

These are my current projects as of March 2026.

Streamkeeping

In 2025, I joined my local Streamkeepers society, taking care of four local streams as well as doing invasive plant management and monitoring on other local streams. I am currently not volunteering due to illness, but plan on picking it back up as soon as I am able.

Photo is of one of my favourite local spots: the estuary of Dakota Creek.

Foraging

I am a former professional chef, so it only makes sense that foraging, food preservation, and cooking would be a big interest for me.

I spend as much time in the woods as possible, always keeping an eye out for wild foods. When I find new ones, I try a few ways to consume and preserve them. With ones that I've tried before and love, I have a yearly routine of watching, sustainably harvesting, preserving, and enjoying.

One day I hope to teach a local foraging class.

iNaturalist Projects

I love recording local plant (and other) species via iNaturalist. If I notice something new to me, or a species I am interested in, I always try to take and share photos that help to ID it to species.

I add every single Pacific Banana Slug I find, because I love the colour variations!

I also spend time reviewing other local submissions to ensure we have the best data possible.

Ditch Restoration

I am currently working on a plan to restore the ditches on our property, removing invasives and replacing with native plants.

The goal is to have a healthy ecosystem in our ditch systems, which is a challenge because they are alongside a public road.

Christmas Bird Counts

I am a bird nerd. They bring me joy, and I love to watch them.  It seemed completely natural to me to start participating in our local Christmas Bird Count, starting in December 2024, through my local natural history society. I missed the 2025 count, but plan on participating again in 2026. Photo below is of my 2024 partner with his scope, in a terrible windstorm!
