About Matthew
I have been in love with nature my entire life, but waited until the 2020s to really start learning about it, thanks to the SARS-COV2 pandemic.
I had several nature-related peak moments (snowshoeing around a corner and discovering a herd of elk laying in the snow covered forest is one!) and eventually found myself buying plant systematics text books and watching Zoom lectures about bats and earthquakes and mosses and everything in between.
Starting in 2024, I really began engaging with the knowledge and experiences I had picked up in my 40+ years on this planet.
My current priorities are:
-
Documenting and witnessing my local biodiversity and changes to it.
-
Teaching others about the living world around them.
-
Enjoying foraging wild foods and using or preserving them.
-
Developing relationships with mentors and teachers.
-
Participating in citizen science projects.
-
Finding more ways to combat invasive species spread.
-
Growing flowers, vegetables, and herbs on our property.
Is this a lot for a hobby? Yep, it sure is, but I am starting to realize that this is not just a hobby for me. This is an adventure, and I am so glad to be on it.
Some personal details to keep the paparazzi happy: I have been married since 2015 to my amazing husband, we have a standard poodle, and we live in a rural area outside Vancouver, British Columbia. I am currently off work due to illness, and spending as much time outside as possible. I am queer, trans, a leftist, cool in a crisis, and a bit extra.
